August turned out to be a disappointing month in terms of mobile data speed with all top telecom operators except Reliance Jio registering a fall in their 4G mobile data speeds (download). This is the fourth consecutive month of decline. The country’s largest mobile broadband services provider, Reliance Jio, improved its performance in August, raising its 4G download speed — albeit marginally — to 18.43 Mbps in August against 18.37 Mbps in July.

However, the new incumbent operator again topped the regulator Trai’s speed test for August 2017 by clocking an average 4G download speed of 18.43 Mbps. This is the eight consecutive month for Jio at the top in the 2017 calendar year.

The telecom arm of Reliance Industries reported data speeds (4G) of 18.65 Mbps, 18.81 Mbps, 19.12 Mbps, 18.49 Mbps, 16.49 Mbps and 17.43 Mbps in June, May, April, March, February and January, respectively, an analysis of the latest figures from Trai revealed.

The country’s largest telecom operator, Bharti Airtel’s mobile data speed fell to 8.55 Mbps in August from 9.28 Mbps in July. It had clocked 11.25 Mbps, 10.44 Mbps, 9.14 Mbps, 10.15 Mbps, 8.23 Mbps and 8.92 Mbps in January, February, March, April, May and June, respectively.

The top second and third telecom operators — Vodafone India and Idea Cellular — too registered a decline in August. Vodafone clocked a speed of 9 Mbps against 9.59 Mbps in July, while Idea’s speed was 8.75 during the month against 8.89 Mbps in July.

In the first half of the current calendar, Vodafone clocked a 4G download speed of 8.34 Mbps, 7.93 Mbps, 9 Mbps, 13.39 Mbps, 12.30 Mbps and 11.07 Mbps in January, February, March, April, May and June, respectively. Idea clocked speeds of 11.86 Mbps, 12.09 Mbps, 8.89 Mbps, 13.71 Mbps, 11.66 Mbps and 9.47 Mbps during January, February, March, April, May and June, respectively.

Apple has unveiled hundreds of new emojis based on Unicode 10, which will be a part ofiOS 11.1. These include gender-neutral characters, more clothing options, food types, mythical creatures, and more. The new emojis will make it to developer and public beta previews of iOS 11.1 next week, followed by public release. Apple hasn’t specified final release date for iOS 11.1 for iOS, macOS and watchOS.

“iOS 11.1 will also include characters announced on World Emoji Day like Woman with Headscarf, Bearded Person, Breastfeeding, Zombie, Person in Lotus Position and new food items such as Sandwich and Coconut,” Apple said in a press release. Another addition is the Love-You Gesture which has been inspired from ‘I love you’ hand sign in American Sign Language.

Apple had previewed a couple of emojis on World Emoji Day which is marked on July 17. The list includes new animals like T-Rex, Zebra as well as Star-Struck and Exploding Head smiley faces emojis.  In total, 51 icons were approved by Unicode Consortium.

Apple has also included an Orange Heart, Person in Lotus Position, Woman Climbing, Person Climbing, Person in Steamy Room, Woman Zombie, Man Zombie, Elf, Merperson, Vampire, Fairy, and more. Food emojis like Dumpling, Boroccoli, Fortune Cookie, Canned Food are also part of iOS 11.1 software update.

Apple’s new emojis come few days after WhatsApp rolled out its own set of emojis for Android beta. Emojis released by the Facebook-owned company seem heavily inspired by Apple’s. Facebook Messenger uses a completely different set of emojis which the company unveiled in June 2016 for its platform.

Alphabet Inc’s Google on Wednesday unveiled the second generation of its Pixel smartphone along with new voice-enabled home speakers, redoubling its commitment to the hardware business as it competes with a surge of devices from Apple Inc and Amazon.com Inc.

In India, the Pixel 2 will be priced as: Pixel 2 64GB (Rs 61,000), Pixel 2 128GB (Rs 70,000), Pixel 2 XL 64GB (Rs 73,000), Pixel 2 XL 128GB (Rs 82,000).

Pre-orders commence on October 26, 2017, and Pixel 2 will be available for sales in more than 1,000 stores across the country and online starting November 1.

Pixel 2 XL will be available for sale in stores and online starting November 15, 2017. Pixel 2 and Pixel 2XL will be available online, exclusively on Flipkart.

Google’s new products, including a Pixelbook laptop, wireless earbuds and a small GoPro-like camera, showcase Google-developed operating systems and services, notably the voice assistant. That means usage of those devices should stoke the company’s core ad sales business as buyers of the hardware use Google services like search and maps.

Speaking at the launch in San Francisco, Google hardware chief Rick Osterloh said the new products “perfectly demonstrate our strategy of re-imagining hardware from the inside out”, a Reuters report said.

The Pixel 2 smartphone comes in two sizes, with comparable features, including aluminium bodies and no traditional jacks for headphones. Prices for the base model start at $649, while the high-end version starts at $849. The phones will be available Oct. 19.

The Pixel phones lack the brand lustre and market share of similarly priced smartphones such as the Apple iPhone or Samsung Electronics Co’s Galaxy S and Galaxy Note smartphones. Still, the original Pixel’s camera and software drew acclaim from reviewers, many of whom expect the line to become a robust competitor at the high end of the Android smartphone market.

Pixelbook, priced at $999, is the first laptop powered by Google Assistant and will support Snap Inc’s Snapchat, the company said. The keyboard folds behind the screen to turn the 12.3-inch touchscreen into a tablet. It will be available in stores from Oct 31, Reuters said.

Google Home Mini, one of the new speakers, is priced at $49 in the United States and would rival Amazon.com Inc’s popular Echo Dot. It will be available Oct. 19. The Home Max, with dual woofers for more powerful sound, is priced at $399 and with availability by the end of the year.

The Pixel Buds, which are priced at $149, arrive in November. Clips, which is pocket-sized camera with object detection and automatic recording capabilities, “soon” goes on sale for $249, Google said. Videos last only a few seconds and do not contain audio.

The Pixel smartphone debuted a year ago, with analysts estimating sales of more than 2 million, pushing Google to record amounts of non-advertising revenue.

Google’s “other” revenue category, which includes both hardware and sales of online storage services, accounted for about 12% of overall sales in its most recent quarter.

Last month, Google expanded its hardware development capabilities by picking up a 2,000-person smartphone engineering team at HTC for $1.1 billion, Reuters said.

“It’s pretty clear Google is serious about hardware,” said Avi Greengart, research director at consumer data firm GlobalData. “Given that there is a Pixel 2, and given the financial investment, there must be a longer-term strategic intent.”

HARDWARE CHIEF HAS SECOND GO

Google moved into smartphones five years ago with the $12.5-billion purchase of Motorola Mobility. But Motorola’s hardware team, under Osterloh, and Google’s Android mobile operating system division remained independent. Google wanted to avoid giving it a special advantage and protect its relationships with Samsung, LG and other distributors of Android. The company later sold the Motorola smartphone business.

Osterloh, now working inside Google, moved to bring in-house the HTC team Google contracted to design the Pixel. He enjoys a strong relationship with Hiroshi Lockheimer, the Android division head. The pair have been friends since working together for several years at Good Technology in the early 2000s.
